FORMER WEST CATHOLIC STAR NIA ALI IS WORLD
CHAMPION

Nia Ali, 30, who
was raised in Germantown, finished first in 12.34 seconds Sunday on the last day
of competition at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Doha, Qatar.
When she looked
at the scoreboard after breaking the tape and saw her name posted in first
place, Ali broke into tears.
"I replayed this race so much in my
head, and every time that's the way it ended for me," she told the
Associated Press. "So just to see it play out
exactly how I envisioned it, that was my natural reaction."
MY VISIT
TO WEST CATHOLIC
submitted by: FRANK ADOLF
Last year I received a letter
from Lauren Stager who is the Director of Major and Planned Gifts at West
Catholic Prep.
Lauren stated that she was
new to West having been hired in the advancement office in the summer of
2018. She indicated that she wanted to meet with me to discuss my
thoughts and perceptions of the school today and more specifically my
experiences with West Catholic. Well my hip issues and ultimate surgeries
to replace both hips got in the way of setting up a meeting. Now that I
am recovered and walking again unassisted, I arranged with Lauren to meet
at West as I wanted to see the improvements that have occurred over
the past couple of years.
On Thursday afternoon,
October 24, I drove into West Philadelphia to meet with Lauren.
After arriving at West, I parked next to the Our Lady of Lourdes
Shrine which was constructed using stones saved from the original
shrine at West Boys' along with the statues of St. Bernadette and the
Blessed Mother. The sale of memorial plaques, which are
placed in front and to the side of the shrine, helped pay for
the construction.
Lourdes Shrine with memorial plaques
My
daughter Cindy and son-in-law Tim purchased the below
memorial plaque as a Christmas gift for me.
My plaque with its own personal greenery
There still is plenty of
space for additional plaques. Perhaps, you may want to remember
a fellow classmate or someone who has served in the military, or have your name
on a plaque as part of the memorial. Purchase instructions are available
on the Alumni Website at: www.westcatholicalumni.org
The 1920 cornerstone from the
Boys' original school and the 1923 cornerstone from the "Annex" were
preserved and are next to the shrine.
I then headed toward the
school and was greeted in the parking lot by a student who was
in her junior year. She escorted me to Lauren's office. While
talking with Lauren, Andrew Brady stopped in to say hello. He expressed his
appreciation for all that the Class of 1958 does for West Catholic,
especially the newsletter.
Lauren took me on a
tour to see the updated Cafeteria, the refurbished Gym, the renovated
Library, the Engineering Lab, the Chapel, and the
Auditorium.
Cafeteria
The Cafeteria
received renovations to provide students with a warmer more comforting
environment. The signage and painting brings life to a space that on a
daily basis is the most used facility in the building.
The Gymnasium
floor was renovated and named after the late Irene Mazur '64, sister
of Len Mazur '63.. The
court was redesigned, with branding throughout, including the Philadelphia
skyline.
Philadelphia Skyline
Electronic Score Board
Catholic League Logo
The Library renovations were designed to create a collaborative
working space for students to use, including a lounge area that can be accessed during lunch, study hall,
or before and after school.
Student Lounge
Lauren introduced
me to Daryl Blodgett who came to West in 2018 as the school's Family
Coordinator. He explained that his role is to "fill in the
gaps" which includes everything from helping students who are overwhelmed,
to just being a good listener. The Lounge is an ideal place for students to
mingle, study or do homework, or even
take a nap. While I was there the "dismissal bell rang"
and the students began exiting. They all fist-bumped or high-fived
Daryl as they left the room.
The Engineering Technology Lab
In 2014, through a
partnership with Drexel University's School of Engineering, a curriculum was
designed as a four year program where students can even
earn college credits. At the time, an anonymous donor made a
generous commitment to fund the program, including the cost of teacher
salaries.
The Engineering Technology
Lab has been equipped with the latest state of the art
machinery. Several local businesses who see
students as potential employees upon graduation from high school or
college, have helped with outfitting the Lab.
The
old card catalog from the Library was saved and is displayed in the Lab.
The Chapel
The St. Jude Shrine was donated by the late John A. Duffy, Class of
1951 in memory of his wife Joan.
The Auditorium
Banners set up for an Honors Award Ceremony that evening
Back in her office after the
tour, Lauren discussed the various ways one can make a legacy contribution
to West Catholic. Essential Lauren's goal is to build the
endowment to ensure that West Catholic will continue to provide a
quality education to future generations.
Lauren walked me
to the exit, and once again thanked me for the time and resources
that I and our committee expends on behalf of
West Catholic. I thanked Lauren for taking the time to show me
around and for the warm welcome that I received. It
was great to see that the traditions of a Lasallian education
are continuing at West Catholic.
I encourage everyone
to respond to the school's open invitation to stop in if you are in
the neighborhood. It will be well worth your time.
UPDATE ON BIG DADDY GRAHAM
Gleaned from The Philadelphia Inquirer
Oct. 30, 2019
Ed
Graham, 66, is back in the ER just
weeks after returning home following
an 88-day recovery from a spinal
cord injury in July that
left him paralyzed from the waist down.
"He
has pneumonia in both of his lungs, he has an inflamed kidney, and he has a
necrotic femur, so theres dead skin on the back of
his leg, Ava Graham, who also works on-air at the
station, said on the WIP Morning Show Tuesday.
Thats the biggest thing theyre
going to have to address right now.
Things had been looking up for Graham. He was released from
Magee Rehabilitation Hospital earlier this month with hopes he would return
soon to host his overnight show at the station. Despite having to come to terms
with the likely prospect of never being able to walk again, the longtime sports
talker and comedian has managed to remain positive.
Heres the bright side of everything: I reunited with some
friends I hadnt seen in years. And some people
really went out of their way to visit me down here, including Pat Croce, Dick
Vermeil, and others, Graham
said earlier this month.
I got to live the Its
a Wonderful Life thing
without dying.
VISIT OF SUPERIOR
GENERAL TO CATHOLIC
As part of his
many responsibilities as Superior General of the Christian Brothers, Brother
Robert Schieler FSC, visits
all Lasallian regions and districts during his seven year term. These
Pastoral visits are occasions for encouraging Brothers and Lasallian Partners
and to be in dialogue with the leadership team of each District, identifying
and addressing key areas of attention.
On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, West Catholic Prep hosted Brother Robert
who graduated from West in 1968. Brother Robert met with representatives
of the Archdiocese, as well as students and staff about the important work
happening at West Catholic.

ST. JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE
FOUNDER OF THE CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
COMMEMORATING THE 300th ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH
Gleaned from an article in the Jesuit magazine - America - by PAUL MARIANI
submitted by BOB
DOWD, summarized by FRANK METZLER
John Baptist was
born on April 30, 1651 in Reims, France, educated at the College des Bons Enfants and then at the
Sorbonne in Paris, studying the Classics and Theology. After both his
parents died in a short time, he returned home to care for younger siblings.
Finally in the Spring of 1678, he was ordained a
priest and went on to earn his Doctorate in Theology.
At first he
oversaw the establishment of an order of nuns, who had dedicated themselves to
the education of the poor. He then worked with young men, teaching them
how to teach and thus began his life's work. At that time Bishops and
Prelates in France had insisted on maintaining rigid control of
education. One Cardinal deposed de La Salle and placed another priest in
his place. The teachers became discouraged for the lack of necessary
education skills. St. John supported them by taking them into his own
home, feeding them, and improving their teaching skills. At the age of
34, John Baptist resigned his priestly canonry, sold his home and his
possessions, giving the money to the poor.
In time the
Christian Brothers took shape. He sent Henri L'Heureux
to the Sorbonne in Paris to study for the priesthood with a specialty in
Theology. Henri died shortly before ordination. After much
prayer and discernment, de La Salle realized that the priesthood was not
essential for the Christian Brothers. Approaching 60 years and worn
down maintaining schools, John Baptist convoked a chapter to elect one of
the two trusty Brothers he could rely on, as Superior General, to carry on
the work of the institute after he died. Brother Barthelemy,
a solid choice, was elected and de La Salle worked with him.
Finally,
bedridden and nearly blind and after receiving the sacraments, he died on
Good Friday, April 7, 1719, just short of his 68th birthday. Six years
later the Christian Brothers were approved by the Vatican as a teaching order,
and 175 years later, in 1950, Pius XII declared St. John Baptist de La Salle
the Special Patron of All Teachers in the Catholic Church.
Altar of St. John Baptist De La Salle at St. Nicholas
Cathedral, Monaco - August 30, 2010
Along with the
cultivation of a spirit of faith, piety, self discipline,
and obedience, a classical and practical education came to characterize the
Christian Brothers. The lower classes, as St. John Baptist de La Salle
understood, were every bit as entitled to be taught as the wealthy.
This meant schools led by well-educated teachers.

FAN OF WEST, SPORTING MORE CAPS, T-SHIRTS, JACKETS, ETC. THAN YOU COULD COUNT. ( BY THE WAY, HE LEFT ALL OF THESE ITEMS TO ME.) HE
WAS A FREQUENT ATTENDEE OF THE "BURRS ON THE BEACH" AND WAS PICTURED,

THANKS FRANK. APPRECIATE ALL YOU ARE DOING TO KEEP OUR

Jim "Dutch" O'Malley: Hi Clarkie, No
problems this time. Got about 12 inches of rain over 48 hours and we can
handle that. Problem is these slow moving storms can stall periodically
and some towns/cities can get deluged with rain. Forty miles north of us
got 20-25 inches and the same distance East got 40 inches!
Really appreciate you checking in on us. Hope all is well
with you. Thanks for all you do for our '58 Class.
I was with a Villanova grad yesterday who
is a Roman Catholic grad 1959. They are having their 60th celebration next
month. He reminded me that 10 years ago, when he was head of the alumni
association and the 50th celebration, I told him about the unbelievable
leadership we ('58) had and I sent him contact info and copies of our
Newsletters, etc. It was real nice that after ten years he still
remembered what you guys did and continue to do to keep us connected.
Thanks again and best regards, Dutch
Jim Lynch: Frank n Frank. Another great
job on the newsletter; really enjoyed it. Lynchie
John McCloskey: Great job Frank on your publication.
Bob Dowd: Frank and
Frank: I just read the Fall Edition. It was very informative.
Thanks to you and the staff for putting it all together. Also, I read in
the Inquirer yesterday the price that Prendergast got from DC Community College
for their property was $3 million. The sale you mentioned in your
newsletter. Bob Dowd '58
Brother Kevin Stanton: Thanks very much Frank to you and your associates.
Always an enjoyable and informative read. Best to one
and all. Br. Kevin
Brother Pat Carney: I am honored that you decided to send my note to such an esteemed
group. And nice job with the newsletter, by the way.
Pat
Fran Lawless WC
'68: Frank, You guys of '58 outdo
yourselves with every new edition of the Newsletter. Like the Fall 2019 love letter to St. Barnabas Parish by Lou
Baldwin. Who does he think he is? Mickey Spillane? Or the brother of James Baldwin the author? Hopefully
someone does as much justice to my parish (MBS) one day as Lou did for St.
Barney's. And Frank, your pictures were great. You know, they
closed the Roy Rogers museum due to lack of patronage, but I'm glad you were a
fan of Trigger & presented him in a photo. You spend a lot of words
and pictures on those that are no more. The deceased.
And that's good. You don't forget. You of '58 are First
Class. Always will be. Fran Lawless 1968
Editor's Note:
A little background on what Lou Baldwin has done
over the years. Lou was a reporter for the now defunct Catholic
Standard and Times in Philadelphia and is now an award winning reporter
for the Catholic News Service. Over the years, Lou has covered all
significant parish anniversaries and continues
to do so to this day for CatholicPhilly.com.
In this role he has covered MBS extensively. In 2001,
he wrote about MBS's 100th Anniversary Mass. He also reported on the
closing "Unity" Mass at MBS in 2007. On January
28, 2010, he wrote an extensive article about plans to
install historic artifacts from MBS at St. Bede the Venerable Church
in Holland, PA. As a follow-up to that article on September 28,
2011, he covered the rededication of the renovated St. Bede. He was
the one of the main sources for my article on the history of MBS
which was published in the Winter 2013
Newsletter.
Joe Myers: Frank, Really enjoyed reading the latest Burr's
newsletter. I'm sure my fellow classmates of the Class of 58 feel the
same, and deeply appreciate the work that you do and the other Burrs put
into its creation.
I want to commend you for the memorial tribute to our
recently departed classmates and in particular the careful and respectful way
you worded the notification of the passing of my good friend Dan Remy. I
had sent to your staff the scant info I had received about his death based on
what his daughter had told me.
I tried in vain to forward the news letter to his daughter as an
attachment. She emailed me this morning saying she was unable to open
it. I know how much it would mean to her and the other member of his
family to read the announcement and to see his accompanying yearbook photo.
So I ask if you would kindly forward such, both to her and this
other good friend Bill Campion ('59). I appreciate your help with this.
Frank O'Keefe:
Frankie, attach is a copy of the letter sent to all the
Guy's who sponsored or donated to the Jim Moorehead Fund. The Sisters were more than happy to
receive our donation on behalf of Jim Moorehead, and
we were thrill to sit down and spend time with the Sisters, brought back many
memories. Frank O'Keefe, Jr.
Frank Welsh: Frank, Thanks for this
newsletter. I appreciate the update and news about our fellow
classmates.
I have been remiss in not keeping closer touch with the class of
'58. I was particularly saddened by the situation that has overtaken
Larry Dempsey. I will put him in my prayers. BTW, his sister Mary and
my sister Marguerite were very close friends.
I am going to make an extra effort to get to the next luncheon at
the Clarion in Essington next May. My only excuse for not making the
last few is that my part time job for the Phillies as a Tour Guide has resulted
in schedule conflicts. But, I will work on that.
I hope your double hip replacements work out for you as well as
mine did. Frank Welsh
Dick Boyle: Dear Frank, at
this time of the year I am sadden to have to announce the passing of my beloved
Brother, John F. Boyle, class of 1945. John was a kind, gentle soul that
passed away today (12/8/19) after a long illness. I ask that anyone
reading this will take one minute for an Our Father and Hail Mary for the
happy repose of the soul of a good man.
Thanks, Dick Boyle
Comments
received on the passing of Denny Brennan:
Tom Hughes: Hi Frank,
Some more sad news for the Class of 58. Denny Brennan from St. Barny's died on Monday morning Sept 23, 2019.
The services will be on Saturday, September 28th 2019 at St. Anastasia in
Newtown Square. Visitation will be from 9:00 am to 10:30 am followed
by a Funeral Mass. Denny was a good guy and great friend. I
will really miss him.
Best Regards, Tom
Hughes
Jim Clark: OH
MY! Denny and I were just shopping at the GIANT food store in Broomall,
Pa. , and Denny seemed to be His Very Pleasant
Self. UNBELIEVABLE! Clarkie
Bob Sproul: Very sorry to hear about another great
St. Barny's class friend. I will keep Denny in
my prayers.
Jim Gallagher: Thanks Frank, Denny was a real good
guy. Again, thanks for keeping the Class of "58" together.
Charlie Johnson: Frank, I
did respond to Tommie's note to you. Yes, Denny was a good guy for sure.
Charlie "W"
Des Butler: This news is particularly troublesome to
me. Denny was a classmate at St. Barnabas and was in several West
Catholic classes with me (and I believe in FC homeroom in our first
year). We were frequently seated closely because of the alphabetic order
so often used at the beginning of the year. Our identical initials DB was another tie. When I was able to attend
the WC spring luncheon he was always someone I sought out for
remembrances. I do not think he was at the 2019 lunch: was he ill?
My sister lives
in Broomall and ordinarily I would attend his services BUT my stepdaughter died
recently and I and her mother Valerie will leave for Los Angeles Fri. AM for a few days with her brother who is also
still grieving. Please share my condolences to any of the family and our
WC colleagues.
Dave Crines: Hello Frank: I
was so sorry to hear about the passing of Denny Brennan. I remember from
my Saint Barney's days what a good friend he was. I kept remembering
things we did together and just wanted to write something more so here it
is:
Denny Brennan
All who have the
West Catholic spirit will miss Dennis Joseph Brennan. Let me tell
you of my involvement with Denny.
My name is
David C. Crines, Class of WC 1958 (a lot of guys at
West called me by my nickname, "Murphy"). When Denny and I
spent hours playing with the other kids in St. Barnabas' school yard,
I asked him "Why do the kids call me Murphy?" Denny
replied, "cause you look Irish". Funny
thing is I am not Irish, but Scottish descent. Denny signed my yearbook -
"To Murph, always a great friend".
Denny and I grew
up in SW Philly. for some reason I was only to
Denny's house once, and he only once to mine.
Our St. Barnabas
buddy, Tommy Hughes summed it up best when Tom said, "Denny was a good guy
and a good friend". I concur.
I lettered in CC
(cross country) in my senior year, with a Championship letter. Denny won
4 Letters in track and basketball. Most of his were Championships.
I always admired Denny's athletic abilities from St. Barnabas to West
Catholic.
When we graduated
from West, Denny went his way and I went mine. It wasn't until the 1990's
that we met up again. We both became track officials (PIAA and
USTF). We worked several track meets together. Then I had a stroke
and again Denny sent his way and I went mine.
But it will
always be true, Denny and all us St. Barnabas boys grew up together. We
are the same piece of cloth. I am sure Denny would join our "Class
of 58" in saying - "Go Burrs". As Tommy Hughes said,
"Denny was a good guy, our friend," and we will miss him
deeply.
A long time friend, David C. Crines
Visitation and Mass
for Denny Brennan:
The Visitation
and Mass for Denny Brennan on September 28th at St. Anastasia Church in Newtown
Square was well attended by family and many friends from St. Barnabas and
West Catholic.
In addition to
West alums from other years of the 1950's, the Class of '58 was
represented by: Frank Adolf, Jim Clark, Bob DiRita,
Bob Dowd, Larry Doran, Duke Gallagher, Tom Hughes, George & Barbara Light,
Bill Marella, Frank Miller, Frank O'Keefe, Angelo Sivieri and Bob Gormley's wife
Carole. A fitting tribute for a good guy.

FINAL THOUGHT
submitted by:
RICH BUZZA
The Christmas
season is here with all of its hustle and bustle of buying gifts and finding
the best sale prices for Black Friday, things which seem very important to most
of us, but when brought in to prospective have little meaning. I am
thinking of the families of our recently departed classmates who are facing
their first Holiday Season without their husband, father, or brother. I
am remembering the families of Denny Brennan, Tom Stephen Gallagher, George
Powers, Jim Moorehead, Dan Remy, and Bob
Madden.
For each of these
families I pray a special prayer for strength, hope and remembrance.
Strength, to get through this sad time with a smile for everyone in this joyous
season although carry an empty feeling in your
heart. Hope, in knowing that your loved one is with
God. And finally, Remembrance, take joy in remembering all of
the good times which he shared with each of you and most of all, his
love. Amen.
I wish everyone a
very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.
God Bless
