WEST CATHOLIC FOOTBALL

submitted by: JIM LYNCH

HOME OF THE DEFENDING 2008 PHILADELPHIA CITY AND CATHOLIC LEAGUE DIVISION AA CHAMPIONS ALSO CLASS AA PENNSYLVANIA STATE RUNNER- UP

The 1st year in the PIAA the Catholic League produced 2 finalists in the State Championships: Archbishop Wood in the 3AAA division and our West Catholic in the 2AA division.  Both sadly missed bringing home a state championship but we hope to rectify that this year.  West Catholic came in as the 2AA State Champion runner-up.  We are now looking forward for a repeat to the State Finals with the Championship tucked under our belt.

This season started with the Wildwood Bowl:  Sept. 5th  West 21 - Roman 18

Followed by:

Sept 12th  West 35 - Penn Charter 7

Sept 18th  West 14 - LaSalle 16

Sept 26th  West 42 - Carroll 7

Oct 3rd  West 21 - Wood 28

Three more league games will follow the Wood game.  Our running game still has a great deal of speed even with the loss of 3- 1000 yd rushers with the 2008 graduation; but we look to be in contention for another great finish.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a “58” connection with the team, #41 TE/DE Jim Lynch 3rd, grandson of yours truly.

For any and all interested in the teams progress you can check out all West football information at the following web site:  http://web.mac.com/cauls/WCBURRSFOOTBALL/HOME.html

JIM ENGLISH: submitted by RICH BUZZA

To all of our grads out there, our fellow classmate, Jim English has had a very difficult year to say the least.  Jim retired in the spring of 2008, purchased a new travel trailer and looked forward to a happy retirement, traveling the country and camping where he pleased.  Jim readied his trailer for his trips but before he even got it out of the driveway he developed some health problems which landed him in nursing facility where he developed an infection on his right leg.

No fun spending Christmas 2008 in a hospital, Jim and his doctors fought this infection all through the winter only to loose the battle in May of 2009 when they had to remove the leg just below the knee.

I had a long phone conversation with Jim in late September, he is now doing very well, he is still rehabbing and has been measured for a new modern prosthesis, his spirits are high.  I asked him how it was going and if there was anything that we could do for him, his response was "Tell all of the guys I said Hello and that I am getting the best of care...one good thing about this is, now I get twice the wear from a pair of socks." Thank God for Jim's comedic personality as it will carry him through this situation.  Jim is quite a guy, he is already making plans for his first trip camping using his new trailer in the Spring of 2010.  Get well wishes may be sent to Rich Buzza's e-mail address:  richbuzza@comcast.net and they will be forwarded to Jim.

KEEP THE SPIRIT ALIVE!
