Bugey, Dan

Daniel J. Bugey, 69, of Haverford, Darby Borough postmaster, died of a heart attack Sunday February 22, 2009, at home.

In 1994, a year after becoming postmaster, Mr. Bugey hosted a customer appreciation week featuring tours and hot dogs, coffee, and Danish. He was a people person and loved his job, his daughter Valerie Bowman said.

Mr. Bugey graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic High School, where he was a star basketball player. He earned a bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's University and played on the team that went to the NCAA Final Four in 1961.

While working for Philco Ford Corp. in Philadelphia, he earned a master's degree in business from Drexel University. He was a human resources manager at Philco when he left in 1974 to join the Postal Service's labor relations department in Philadelphia.

Until he was in his 50s Mr. Bugey played squash regularly at the Cynwyd Club. In recent years he worked out every morning at a gym before going to the post office, his daughter said.

He was the go-to guy to fix anything for neighbors and family, his daughter said. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events and every Sunday arrived at his daughter's home with doughnuts for his grandchildren and their friends, she said.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Bugey is survived by daughter Kristine Smith; a sister; two brothers; three grandchildren; and his former wife, Marie Patterson.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, 31 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr. Friends may call from 9 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
